Youths of all ages in Union will get a chance to try their hand at wrestling with the forming of a new club.

Open to elementary, middle and high school studentss, the club will start this Spring and run through the summer. Several tournaments are being planned, said George McDaniel, club founder and Sims wrestling coach.

“I am trying to get all this started to help benefit our High School teams in the future,” McDaniel said. “I am a firm believer in keeping kids busy in school functions throughout the year to keep them out of trouble. I was once a troublesome kid myself and sports saved me.”

Tournaments will be set up by age groups, and plans so far are to use Union County’s gym on Wednesday evenings for practice. Those interested can download a NUWAY card for $13 from teampalmettowrestling.org.

“Club Wrestling will require a lot of the parents and the kids to work hard but I feel the interest and enthusiasm is really there,” McDaniel said. “No better time to start than now.”

McDaniel is also starting a weight-lifting club at Sims this Spring. Middle-school students will be taken to Union County on Tuesdays and Thursdays for weight-lifting and conditioning.

“ I think the future is looking bright for our programs,” McDaniel said. “I am hoping the Club Wrestling squads and weightlifting are just the beginning.”
