The Union County JV baseball team dropped a 6-4 loss to Chapman on Tuesday, despite stellar production from the top of the line-up.
The Jackets’ lead off hitter, J.D. Cheek, went a perfect 2-2 at the dish with singles in the second and fourth innings while Brian Savage delivered two hits on three at-bats with three RBI. Kannon Small, the number three batter, was 1-2 with a walk and an RBI.
However, it was not enough for the Jackets to claim a win. Chapman took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first but Union County matched the output with two runs of its own with RBI singles from Kannon Small and Brian Savage.
Chapman pushed across two more in the second and again, the Jackets responded with a pair in their portion of the inning. Cheek singled down the third base line and scored on Savage’s two-run rope to center field.
A fielding error gave Chapman its first base runner in the top of the third and Union County pitcher Wesley Mannes was touched up for three hits in the inning as Chapman took the lead for good.
Mannes and Hunter Bailey and shared time on the mound for Union County. The two combined to allow six runs with two strikeouts and seven walks.
The Jackets collected seven hits off Chapman’s pitching staff. Cheek and Savage led with two hits each. Small, Jordan Jeter and A.J. Hunter each added a hit.
