UNION — The Union County High School Yellow Jacket Battalion held its tenth annual Military Ball at the Union National Guard Armory on March 9, 2013. Welcoming the cadets in the receiving line were the Battalion Adjutant, C/1LT Michael Leigh, Battalion Alumna Dona Nena Wright, Col. (retired) and Mrs. Bill Goodwin, Lt. Col. (retired) and Mrs. Al Black, Principal and Mrs. Floyd Lyles, Michelle McCullough, Col. John Odell and Dr. Odell, Mr. and Mrs. James Palmer and the Battalion Commander C/LTC Ollie Burns and her date Will Cooper.

C/1LT Michael Leigh served as master of ceremony for the evening. Other cadets participating in the program included C/SSG Denise Cipriano playing Mess call on the trumpet, C/SFC Andre Jeter providing the invocation, C/PFC Gino Ferguson playing the national anthem on the violin, and C/PFC Jeffrey McDaniel leading the Cadet Creed. The Color Guard was commanded by C/CPT Avery Hyatt, and consisted of C/SGT Dalton Johnson, C/CPL Kris Lewis, and C/PFC Ricky White.

The guest speaker, Dona Nena Wright, was a cadet in the Yellow Jacket Battalion all four years of high school. She was the S-4 Supply and Logistics Officer her senior year. She graduated in May 2009 and attended University of South Carolina Union, where she worked in the Information Technology Department for two years. She is currently attending North Greenville University, where she will graduate as a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in May. She addressed the cadets about leadership, relating the JROTC leadership curriculum to Biblical examples of leadership. She encouraged the cadets to be leaders and do what is right instead of just standing by and letting someone else take charge.

Following a delicious dinner catered by Midway BBQ and served by a large group of supportive parents; cadets, parents and their dates danced the night away. The evening concluded with the singing “God Bless the U.S.A.” by C/SFC Hailey Sherbert. C/CPL Tatiana Ferguson offered the benediction.
