A Glass of Milk

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.” He said….. “Then I thank you from my heart.”

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit. Years later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case. After a long struggle, the battle was won.

Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words….. “Paid in full with one glass of milk.”

My Thoughts: Pecans In The Cemetery

As we prepare for Easter, I want to share the following story with my readers:

Near the cemetery in downtown Union, there was a big, old pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence. One day towards dark, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts. ‘One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me,’ said one boy. Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence.

Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, ‘One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me…’ He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off. Just around the bend near the Union Oil Mill he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along.

‘Come here quick,’ said the boy, ‘you won’t believe what I heard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls!’

The man said, ‘Beat it kid, can’t you see it’s hard for me to walk.’

When the boy insisted though, the man hobbled slowly to the cemetery. Standing by the fence they heard, ‘One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me.’

The old man whispered, ‘Boy, you’ve been tellin’ me the truth. Let’s see if we can see the Lord…? Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yet were still unable to see anything. The old man and the boy gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence tighter and tighter as they tried to get a glimpse of the Lord. At last they heard, ‘One for you, one for me. That’s all. Now let’s go get those nuts by the fence and we’ll be done…

They say the old man had the lead for a good half-mile before the kid on the bike passed him.

Thought Of The Week

Sometimes the strongest people are the ones who love beyond faults, cry behind closed doors, and fight battles that no one knows about.

Prayer Concerns

Folks, there is some much sickness around us … so many people walking through the valley of illness. The most powerful weapon that the Christian has is the power of prayer. I ask that we never forget those in need of the Master Physician’s touch. Ones that come to my mind are Connie Burgess, Don Moore, Eddie Goins, Jeff Dyson, Jimmy Belk, Bouncer Bright, and Jeff Allison.
