LOCKHART — Lockhart snuffed out a sixth inning rally and held on for a 8-6 win over visiting Jonesville in middle school baseball action on Monday night.
The Red Devils relinquished a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth when Dee Eison touched home on a throwing error. With one out and the go-ahead run standing on third, Jonesville was looking to score when Gerald Hughes connected on a pitch. The ball was fielded and the throw was made to Lockhart’s Gage Sanders at home plate as catcher and runner collided. Sanders held onto the ball for out number two and a ground out to the pitcher on the next play allowed Lockhart to escape the inning with minimal damage, tied at 6-6.
Lockhart’s Ryan Vaughan kept Jonesville’s hitters off balance throughout the first five innings allowing just two hits before being relieved by Ethan Bailey who gave up one hit in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Four Lockhart fielding errors in the first two innings, paired with a hit from Hughes and one from Quan Smith gave Jonesville a 5-0 advantage. Lockhart went to work in the bottom of the second and answered with a six-run inning. Seth Parker, Bailey and Dalton Vinson each contributed singles and Daniel Hill doubled to propel Lockhart to a 6-5 lead.
After three scoreless innings, Jonesville knotted the game in the top of the sixth but Lockhart responded with two in the bottom of the inning.
The Wildcats threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs but Bailey finished it at the plate with a strikeout.
Bentley Burr took the loss for Jonesville. He struck out four, walked two and allowed seven hits.
