UNION — For the 15th year in a row, the Union County Recreation Department’s annual Father-Daughter Dance was a success.
The UCRD hosted the annual event — billed as an opportunity for fathers and their daughters, ages 3-20, to spend quality time together — on Saturday evening. The gymnasium was decorated with candles, balloons and a disco ball to authenticate the dance floor atmosphere.
As father-daughter couples arrived, they each received a corsage and a stuffed animal. They were then invited to eat, have pictures taken by Timeless Treasures and of course, hit the dance floor. The event’s music was provided by Dean “D.J. Big” Gregory. The UCRD provided its own catering.
“All the girls and dads enjoyed themselves,” said Program Director Jessica Gallman. “We didn’t have to tell anybody to get out there and dance. D.J. Big kept it hopping.”
Gallman said everyone’s participation in line dances such as “The Wobble,” “Cupid Shuffle,” and the timeless “Electric Slide” provided lots of entertainment. Gallman said although she isn’t a dancer, she was happy to participate in the line dancing.
“I have no rhythm, so it was funny seeing me out there with them,” Gallman laughed.
Gallman said the event also featured giveaways of “Love Monkeys,” and she mentioned that the addition of a disco ball was a big hit.
Chris Woodson and his nine-year-old daughter, Calista, attended the dance as they have for several years.
“We had a great time,” Woodson said. “The dads had as much fun as the girls. It’s a memory we can share with our daughters — and they can share with their friends — for a lifetime.”
Calista said her favorite part of the evening was the dancing, even though her dad wasn’t the best at it.
“No, he cannot dance,” Calista said. “He says he can, but he cannot. He did anyway, and he was having fun so I let him dance.”
“All the girls had fun and enjoyed being with their dads all night,” she added.
Woodson also said the UCRD deserves a pat on the back because the event was very well done, and he hopes more fathers and daughters will catch on and benefit from the event next year.
Gallman said she is thankful for all the UCRD employees chipping in and doing their part to make the event a success. She specifically mentioned that Union County Supervisor Tommy Sinclair and UCRD building superintendent Kenny West were instrumental in the installation of the disco ball.
“We are all looking forward to next year,” Gallman said.
