UNION — Thanks to the support of its “Angel Tree” sponsors, the Salvation Army was able to distribute gifts to 200 children just days before Christmas.
On Wednesday, Dawn Knox, case worker for the Salvation Army, and a group of volunteers distributed bags full of gifts provided by local sponsors of its Angel Tree program.
“We’ve had several sponsors this year,” Knox said. “Sonoco did a great job and we also had Subway, Philippi Baptist Church, Sanders Garden Center, and First Choice Cash Advance. Miss Jean Capps of the WMU gave out a lot of them.”
Knox said the sponsors each distributed the Angel Tree cards which needy families could use to apply for Christmas gifts for their children. The family would fill out the card listing the child’s name, age, gender, and clothing size as well one gift for under $25.
“There were 109 applicants including several sibling groups for a total of 200 children,” Knox said.
Knox said the sponsors then took the Angel Tree cards and used them to select gifts for the children, both clothing and toys which were then turned over to the Salvation Army for distribution.
Wednesday’s distribution took place at the Salvation Army Church on Green Street.
Capt. Donnie Marvels, commanding officer of Union for the Salvation Army, thanked the community for its support, pointing out that it embodies the message of the founder of the Salvation Army.
“I would like send a very warm thank you to the community of Union County for thinking about others at this time of the year,” he said. “William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army preached one of the greatest sermons ever preached and it was a one-word sermon and the word was ‘others.’ Union County certainly exemplified that sermon is a big way.”
