CARLISLE — As many as a 125 families received boxes of food and some signed up to receive firewood during a food distribution sponsored by the Town of Carlisle on Tuesday.
The food distributions, which are held in the Carlisle Hall, began in 2011 when town officials and volunteers began distributing food donated by The Potters Storehouse of Jonesville to needy families in the Carlisle community.
Since they began, the distributions have drawn a large number of people seeking the town’s assistance and Tuesday was no different.
“The distributions were scheduled to start at 9:30, but when I got to the town hall at 8 there was already a long line of people waiting,” Mayor Mary Ferguson-Glenn said. “Fortunately, we had a large number of volunteers to show up and help pack the boxes and distribute them to the people who were waiting.”
Ferguson-Glenn said between 100 and 125 families received boxes of food during the distribution which lasted until 1 p.m.
“We distributed a variety of meats including a few turkeys,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “We also had orange juice, rice, white potatoes, bread, pastry, raisins, canned white potatoes, canned carrots, and pasta.”
Ferguson-Glenn thanked The Potters Storehouse for its continued support of the town’s food distribution effort and its continued generosity to the needy of the Carlisle community.
“They’ve always been very generous and we’re very thankful for all they do,” Ferguson-Glenn said.
Ferguson-Glenn also thanked the volunteers, some of whom she said were from outside the Carlisle community.
“Some of our volunteers were from Carlisle and some were from Union, but they were all great,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “We had a great group of volunteers who came through for us. They were well organized and got the job done for us.”
Tuesday’s food distribution was the second of two the town has sponsored for the holiday season. At its November distribution, the town distributed food to approximately 90 families.
Firewood
One thing that was different from previous distributions was that those seeking food also had the opportunity to sign up for firewood being provided by the town.
“For the past four years Carlisle Finishing, also known as Cone Mills, has been providing us with firewood for families in the Carlisle community who heat their homes with wood,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “We still have some people in our community who heat with wood but who have trouble affording it, so thanks to the generosity of Carlisle Finishing we’re able to help them.”
During Tuesday’s distribution there was a sign-up sheet at the town hall which Ferguson-Glenn said people needing firewood could sign up for it. She said those interested were required to sign their names and leave their phone numbers to allow the town to contact them about providing them with firewood. However, Ferguson-Glenn said only Carlisle community residents who use wood as their primary source of heat are eligible.
