CARLISLE — The holidays are a little brighter for as many as 90 families following a food distribution this week sponsored by the Town of Carlisle.

Since 2011, the town, with the assistance of The Potters Storehouse Church in Jonesville, has been distributing food to needy families in the Carlisle community. The church provides the town with the food for its monthly distribution events which take place at the Carlisle Town Hall.

Mayor Mary Ferguson-Glenn said there was a large turnout for what she said was the first of two distributions the town is sponsoring for the holidays.

“It was our Thanksgiving distribution and it went very well,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “There was such a big turnout we actually ran out of some items, but we still distributed boxes of food to some 80 to 90 families. We began distributing boxes of food at 9:30 and we were still distributing them at 2. I’d say it was very successful.”

While the food is provided by The Potters Storehouse, it is distributed by volunteers. Ferguson-Glenn said one of the volunteers for the Thanksgiving distribution was Union County Council District 2 councilman-elect Frank Hart.

“Frank Hart came and helped us with the distribution, carrying boxes out for senior citizens and the disabled,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “We were very pleased to have him.”

Hart said Friday that he took part in the distribution because he considers the program to be worthwhile and a great opportunity to meet with the residents of the Carlisle community.

“I thought it was a great program,” Hart said. “It was just a great opportunity to get out in the community and talk with folks about some of the issues in the area.

“They had a good crowd, that parking lot was full,” he said. “It was one of the best organized of those type of events that I’ve ever seen and I give Mrs. Ferguson-Glenn the credit for that.”

Ferguson-Glenn thanked Hart and his fellow volunteers and The Potters Storehouse for not only the success of the food distribution program but for making it possible.

“We appreciate The Potters Storehouse and we’re thankful for them and the volunteers,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “It’s because of the food The Potters Storehouse supplies that we are able to meet a need. It’s because of our volunteers that we are able to get that food out into the community to those who need it.”

Ferguson-Glenn said the town will sponsor a Christmas distribution on Dec. 19
