UNION — Additional dual credit courses and Veterans Day contests were among the announcements made during this week’s meeting of the Union County Board of School Trustees.

Dual Credit

Starting in January, Union County High School will offer two dual credit Spanish courses with USC Union.

Cindy Langley, director of secondary instruction, said the district is excited to provide students who have earned units in Spanish I and Spanish II with the opportunity to take two dual credit classes in Spanish with USC Union during the second semester of this school year.

In addition to receiving credit for two high school units weighted at the AP/Dual Credit level, students who successfully pass the USC Union classes will also receive six hours of college credit for Spanish 109 and Spanish 110.

Each class will meet from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Friday at Union County High School for eight weeks.

“It is possible that the Friday sessions for each class will be held from 2:20 p.m. until 3:20 p.m. instead of during the morning time slot,” Langley said. “The decision to hold the Friday classes in the afternoon will be determined after the sign-up period ends to make sure no conflicts are created with previously scheduled classes.”

Veterans Day Contests

Two contests will be held among elementary and middle school students to honor veterans and their families for Veterans Day, and winners will be announced at the Veterans Day parade on Nov. 12.

The theme for both contests is “Showing our Support for Veterans and their Families.”

Elementary school students will participate in a poster contest conducted by art teachers at each school. Three winners per school will be chosen and invited to march in the Veterans Day parade.

Middle school students (grades 6, 7 and 8) will participate in an essay contest. Students will write essays showing appreciation for veterans and their families, concentrating on the ways deployment impacts the family and community. Essays should be original and follow the writing rubric of Union County Schools. Entries should be 300 words or less, and they will be judged at the school level, with a grade level winner recognized from each school.

Judging criteria will include knowledge of the theme, theme development and clarity of ideas.

Field Trips

The board also approved two overnight field trips and one out-of-state field trip at Monday’s meeting.

The UCHS golf team will travel to Coastal Carolina for the state championship.

The fifth grade at Jonesville Elementary/Middle School will travel to Myrtle Beach.

The fourth grade at Monarch Elementary Elementary will travel to Discovery Place in Charlotte.
