UNION — What does a child born in 1943 grow up to be after beginning her education in Union County at Cross Keys Elementary School and checking out books from the Union Carnegie Library Bookmobile?

An author-illustrator of nonfiction science books for children.

Ben Loftis, libary director, announced Wednesday that Ruby Haydock-DeLoach will be at the Union County Carnegie Library on Oct. 27 for book signings and readings.

“She’s from Union originally and now lives in Chapin,” Loftis said. “She contacted us about hosting a signing and reading of her books.”

Loftis said that at 11 a.m. Haydock-DeLoach will read from her new book, “Growing Little Green Thumbs,” which promotes cross generational reading interactions, gardening activities, journal writing and development of beginning literacy skills. The book features picture clues and poetic rhymes which appeal to a young child’s love of language play.

At 2 p.m., Haydock-DeLoach will read from “Earth Turns on Its Axis, and… ” The book states that “observations of events in the natural environment around us lead to the understanding of scientific principles of food chains, habitats, seasons, moon phases, Earth’s rotation on its axis and revolution around the sun.”

In a statement announcing her visit to the library, Haydock-DeLoach stated that she retired in 2007 after 40 years as an educator and established The Art Party Press, Studio & Gallery. As a teacher of writing, Haydock-DeLoach said she always wanted to write a children’s book.

“Make your dreams big,” she advised after writing two books and illustrating both.

The G.R.O.W! (Great Readings Open Worlds) theme echoes through both of Haydock-DeLoach’s books.

Haydock-DeLoach said that she enjoys author-iillustrator visits to schools as her new way to spend a day teaching children and influencing literacy (she may be contacted at rhdeloach@aol.com). She writes a monthly Growing Little Green Thumbs column that can be found at www.jungletaming.com.

The nonfiction science books are for ages 3 to fifth-grade and address National Science and Literacy Standards. Ordering information can be found at http://www.theartpartypress.weebly.com
