USC-Union to honor local pastor

UNION — A former member of the Union/Laurens Commission for Higher Education will be honored for his years of service and dedication at USC-Union’s 17th Annual Founders’ Day celebration on Thursday, Oct. 18.

Rev. A. L. Brackett will be honored during the 11 a.m. ceremony in the USC-Union Auditorium in the Main Building with a reception following in the lobby.

A native of Cowpens, Brackett received his early education in the public schools of Spartanburg County. He received his Bachelor of Ministry and Honorary Doctorate of Divinity Degrees from Columbia Bible Institute in Columbia, South Carolina.

He is currently the pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Gaffney and St. Paul Baptist Church in Union. He has served as pastor at Mt. Zion Baptist for 46 years and St. Paul Baptist for 38 years.

The statement announcing the ceremony described Brackett as having “been an asset to his community through organizations and associations. He served on the Executive Board and Education Committee of the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association, and the South Carolina Education & Missionary Baptist Convention Budget Committee. Reverend Brackett was a founding member of the Cherokee County Black Ministerial Alliance and is a former President of the Downtown Ministerial Association of Union County.”

It further states that Brackett “has also been recognized by the South Carolina Education & Missionary Convention for Outstanding Leadership in the Christian Community, and also by Oxford’s Who’s Who-the Elite Registry for Extraordinary Professionals.”

The announcement states that “USC-Union invites everyone to join in honoring Rev. Brackett for his many years of dedication and service to his community.”
