BONHAM — A facility that is temporarily replacing the recycling convenience center that served the Bonham community has opened a week before it was scheduled to go into operation.
The recycling convenience center was closed Aug. 26 to accommodate the construction of the Gonvauto South Carolina steel service center.
Once the Gonvauto facility is built, Union County plans to build a new state-of-the-art recycling convenience center several hundred feet back from the site of the old one.
In announcing the closing of the center, Union County Supervisor Tommy Sinclair said a temporary facility accepting only household waste and cardboard would be set up across from the old location.
The temporary facility was scheduled to open Sept. 4, but Union County Public Works Director John Gibson said Thursday that the facility would open today.
“It was ready to go,” Gibson said. “We decided we wanted to go ahead and open it before Labor Day, so if there were any problems we could work them out.”
To get to the temporary facility, residents must travel down Jail Road off S.C. 18, go behind the recycling warehouse, turn left onto Animal Shelter Road and turn right.
Gibson urged the public to be patient during the Gonvauto construction process.
“The road will be changing,” Gibson said. “Before this is over there will be various routes that we will have serve the center. As this construction goes on the road will be rerouted. I will put up signs that say ‘Waste Disposal’ with arrows on them. Please follow those signs.”
Gibson said the temporary facility will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2-6 p.m. Sunday. With the exception of the center on South Pinckney Street in Union, all recycling convenience centers are closed on Wednesday.
The temporary facility will only accept household waste and cardboard. Gibson said other recyclable materials will have to be taken to other recycling convenience centers.
Electronic waste which was previously accepted at the Bonham center, will only be accepted at the Sardis center until the new, permanent facility in Bonham is built.
The Sardis facility will also accept tires, but only from residents. Gibson said no retailers will be permitted to dispose of their tires there. They must continue to use the S.C. 18 location and make appointments for delivery.
