Union Legionnaires’ Coach Ed Wages was looking for some intensity from his Junior Legion team on Tuesday night and said it came a little too late.
“We picked it up at the end, but we’ve got to maintain that same level of intensity throughout the whole game,” he said after the 7-2 loss to Inman.
The Legionnaires fell behind when Inman put up two runs in the first inning and added two in the second off of errors.
Despite a couple of hits courtesy of BJ House and Nathan Johnson, the Legionnaires didn’t plate a run until the fourth inning when they picked up two.
Mark Hardy tripled to lead off the inning and Johnson drove him in with a single. House smacked an RBI double to cut the lead to 5-2 but the Legionnaires left the tying run on first as a fly out ended the inning with the bases loaded.
The Legionnaires’ pitching staff struggled in the top of the seventh. A passed ball and a balk resulted in two Inman runs before Jonathan Wages replaced Jermaine Lindsey on the mound to close the inning with a ground out.
The Legionnaires battled in the seventh, but couldn’t overcome the five run deficit.
“We’ve got to get fundamentally sound on the infield,” said Wages. “We made too many errors and that hurt us.”
CJ Kershaw took the loss from the mound after pitching six innings for the Legionnaires. House and Johnson led the offense with two hits apiece. Hardy added a triple and Q. Smith contributed a single.
