Do you see consistency in a lot of people today? I used to have a boss who would say, “Be consistent. Even if you are doing it wrong, do it the same way every time.” His thinking was if you do it the same way every time, even if it is wrong, it can be fixed because now you know what not to do.
The fact is there are a lot of inconsistent people in 2012. People start something but won’t stick with it, whether it is marriage, family, jobs, or church. As a preacher I have seen people start strong and even remain strong for a while, but then they start to get a little slack in certain areas and before you know it they are just hit and miss (more miss than hit, I might add.)
Do you know that the Lord desires that we become consistent in our Christian lives? The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:58, “ Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” The Lord gives us this command that even in the hard times, as well as the good times, be consistent. When trials and tests come, be consistent. When people forsake and the devil attacks, be consistent. Paul told young Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:2, “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season.” What he is saying is, “Timothy, be consistent.”
Let me ask you a question. Have you ever started something but didn’t see it through? Maybe it was to have more prayer or devotional time with your family. Maybe you determined you were going to read your Bible in its entirety within a year. Maybe you decided that you were going to be at church every Sunday unless missing was just unavoidable. Did those devotion and prayer times continue with the same frequency? Did you complete your reading or give up somewhere around Deuteronomy? Did you decide there were some Sundays you were just too tired to get ready or that it was such a beautiful day, you wanted to spend it on the lake? If these or something similar sounds all too familiar there is something missing.
What is missing is a consistent, habitual practice that is fueled by a desire to please God and a hunger to grow closer in your walk with the Lord Jesus. Whatever it is you desire, you’ll have a consistent fellowship with it. I’m glad we serve a Savior that is consistent. He told me He would never leave me nor forsake me and for 40 years now He has kept His word. He has always been there and always will be. Now that is consistency!
Why don’t you start that consistent prayer life today? Begin reading God’s word everyday and strengthen your walk with Jesus. Whatever you start with the Lord, stick with it for the glory of God. God will be glorified through it.
