Jackets win thriller

CLINTON — Union County’s varsity boys’ basketball team pulled out a dramatic double overtime win over rival Clinton, 95-88, on Friday.

“Just a tremendous game,” said coach Joe Pitt. “A great comeback by our young men. Playing a good basketball team, we found a way to win.”

UCHS jumped out to a 23-15 first quarter lead, but Clinton clawed back and was up seven points with 1:20 left in the game. Devin Booker hit a shot to send the game to overtime. Clinton’s Kenny Cook hit a shot to send the game to a second overtime.

The Jackets outscored the Red Devils by seven in the second extra period.

Booker had 26 points, Brandon Stapleton added 22 points, Desmond Floyd had 19 and Mike Mebane had 10 for Union County.

Stapleton had 10 rebounds. Kevin Means had 10 assists. Mebane had six steals.

It was a physical basketball game, with UCHS shooting 53 foul shots, 45 in the second half.

Union County (11-7, 3-1) hosts Greer today for first place in the region.

LADY JACKETS

Clinton defeated Union County’s varsity girls’ basketball team 59-48 on Friday.

“We must continue to play tough pressure defense and recognize when we are open on offense,” said coach Yoneko Washington. “We must also cut down on our turnovers. We had 22 at the half and I would not want that many in a game. I am pleased that we never quit and we fought to the end.”

Kristin Giles and Britni Ward each scored 14 points to lead the Lady Jackets. Sharniece Stewart added 11 points, Jessica Hall had four, McKale Hardy had three and Janeka Brannon had two.

Hardy had 12 rebounds, Ward had nine, Giles had four, Whitney Smith and Hall each had two and Janeka Brannon had one. Hardy also had a block.

The Lady Jackets (3-11) host Greer today.

WHITMIRE WOLVERINES

WHITMIRE — Newberry Academy defeated Whitmire’s varsity boys’ basketball team 57-45 on Saturday.

Jarrell Ruff-Smalls led the Wolverines with 21 points. Blake Chick and Lamarcus Lindsay each added eight.

WCS (4-12) also lost to Blacksburg on Friday.

LADY WOLVERINES

Whitmire’s varsity girls’ basketball team defeated Newberry Academy 53-24 on Saturday.

Kim Geyer had 14 points and 13 rebounds. Lydie McDaniel had 14 points, Jocelynn Hopp had 11 and Elaina Alcocer had 10.

WCS defeated Blacksburg on Friday and improves to 12-4.

Both Whitmire teams travel to Saluda today.

JMS WILDCATS

JONESVILLE — Cowpens defeated Jonesville 42-31 on Friday.

The Wildcats were led in scoring by Dakota Ivester with 16. Stephon Dunn added six points, while Rene Rowlison had five and Josh Steadings had four.

UCHS JV

Union County’s Reanna Tucker scored 20 points in a 39-34 loss to Clinton JV on Friday. The JV boys’ team won.

Both teams travel to Greer today.
