Ladies of Iris hold annual debutante ball

The Pacolet River Association Center, Union, was the setting for the Annual Iris Debutante Ball, April 19. Mrs. Venyke Free Harley of Columbia introduced six debutantes, each carrying a single purple Iris:

Brittany Tierra Rogers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Rogers, attends Union County High School where she is a senior; secretary of the Beta Club, treasurer of the Hosa Club, a member of the Spanish Club and the Teen Institute. She has received academic awards and has been selected to Who's Who in Minority Leadership. She is a member of the Union County High School track team and was a member of the Teacher Cadet program. She plans to go to Lander University or Coastal Carolina majoring in Education. Brittany's long-term goal is to become a principal. She is a member of Wyatts Chapel Baptist Church and is employed at Pizza Hut. Sponsored by Mrs. Clifford Thomas and presented by her father, her escort was Mr. Clifton Kye Thomas, a freshman at Clemson University majoring in Engineering.

Ariel Alysse Peake is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Kershaw, Sr. She is a senior at Union County High School, a member of the marching band, a Corporal Cadet in JROTC, is on the Yearbook Staff, Future Black Leaders of America, First Priority, and the Beta Club. She has danced for 14 years. Ariel has received nine superior ratings in the Piano Music Festival and was nominated for the Student Ambassador Program. She graduated from Barbizon Modeling School and was accepted in Modeling In Carolina. Ariel is a member of St. Luke Baptist Church where she is on the Junior Usher Board, the choir, and helps open morning services. She will attend the Art Institute in Charlotte in August majoring in Fashion Design. Ariel was sponsored by Mrs. Arthur Gore and presented by her step-father. Her escort was Mr. Alexander O'Brian Tucker, son of Ms. Cynthia Tucker, and a sophomore at Union County High School.

Eboni Chineta Littlejohn is the daughter of Dorothy Dawkins and Gilbert Littlejohn. She attends Gaffney Senior High School where she is an Honor Roll student and has served as a cheerleader. She was recognized by Who's Who Among American Educators her sophomore year. She attends Island Creek Baptist Church where she is an usher, editor of the newsletter, and a member of the youth ministry. Eboni plans to attend Gardner-Webb University majoring in nursing and hopes to become a pediatric nurse practitioner. She was sponsored by Mrs. Douglas Brackett, presented by her father and escorted by Mr. Brandon Jamal McCluney, son of Ms. Janet McCluney and Mr. Frank Watkins. Brandon is a senior at Gaffney Senior High School.

Paulia Denise Hughes is the daughter of Paul D. Hughes and Grace M. Hughes and a Senior at Union County High School where she is Editor-In-Chief of the Yearbook, President of Quill & Scroll, an officer in JROTC, and Military Ball Committee President. Paulia has been a member of the marching band for four years; a member of the National Beta Club, National Society of High School Scholars, Teen Institute, International Thespian Society, Book Club, and Jedi Knights. Community activities include Adopt-A-Highway and Union County Veterans' Parade Planning Committee. She attends McBeth Baptist Church where she is an usher, Awana member, junior choir president, and a children's church volunteer. She is employed by Piggly Wiggly in Union. She plans to attend Spartanburg Methodist College on an Academic/Merit Scholarship, then transfer to Winthrop University to major in Mass Communications. Paulia was sponsored by Mrs. Michael Foster and presented by her father. Her escort was Mr. Collin Michael Foster, a senior at Union County High School, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Foster.

Angela Christine Carter is the daughter of Paula M. Rice and James C. Rice and granddaughter of James "Boo" Norman, Sarah L. Rice and the late Marion F. Jennings Norman. She is a member of Corinth Baptist Church where she is in the youth choir, the usher board, the youth Bible study group, and the website committee. She is a senior at Union County High School and a student at USC-U; a member of Future Farmers of America, the Beta Club and the National Technical Honor Society. Angela plans to attend the University of South Carolina at Union; then transfer to Clark Atlanta University's School of Business majoring in Business Management. She was sponsored by Mrs. Arthur Barrett and presented by her father. Her escort was Mr. Benjamin Bonzell Giles, Jr., son of Mrs. Cynthia Giles and Mr. Benjamin Bonzell Giles, Sr. Ben is a freshman Business Management major at Clemson University.

Taylor Marie Baker is the daughter of Andrena Powell-Baker and Joseph Keith Baker. She is the granddaughter of Billy and Mae Oria Powell and the late Thomas Marion and Blanche Baker. Taylor is a member of Corinth Baptist Church where she is in the youth choir and youth Bible study group. She is a senior at Union County High School and has completed college courses at the University of South Carolina and Winthrop University. School activities include, Morning Announcers, Teacher Cadet, President of the Student Government Association, President of the Beta Club, member of the National Art Honor Society, Quill and Scroll, the Yearbook Staff, Teen Institute, the volleyball team, honors math, English, social studies and science and Gifted and Talented Art; appointed to the Wellness and Health Committee and Who's Who Among American High School Students. She successfully completed Youth Leadership Union County. She is employed with Bi-lo and will attend Winthrop University majoring in English and minoring in Secondary Education. She was sponsored by Mrs. Keith Baker and presented by her father. Her escort was Mr. Ernest Lee Brice, Jr., son of Mrs. Linda Craig Brice and the late Mr. Ernest Lee Brice, Sr. Ernest is a Junior at South Carolina State University, majoring in Business Management.

Attendants to the Debutantes were Miss Brittany Peake and Miss Jessica Rice. Ushers were Mr. Jamal Young, Mr. Dentaveous Ammon Walker, and Mr. Roger Lee McCluney.

The ballroom was decorated with floating candlelit center pieces, lattice, ivy, calla lilies, and irises scattered about the room, capped with the Iris Legacy Banner.

Iris Officers for 2007-2008 are Mrs. Andrena Powell-Baker, Pres.; Ms. Sandra Foster, Vice-Pres.; Mrs. Cookie Dean, Treas.; Mrs. Emma Garner, Financial Sec.; and Mrs. Mary Foster, Program Chairperson.
