State adding $2.2 million to hospital’s bottom line

UNION — A combination of increased funding from the state and cost savings recommended by consultants with other health care organizations could help Wallace Thomson Hospital dramatically improve its financial condition.The Union Hospital District is composed of Wallace Thomson Hospital, Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, Union County EMS, and Carolinas Health Associates. In recent years the district as a whole and its constituent divisions have struggled financially, often losing money both on a monthly and yearly basis. The district’s financial difficulties have stemmed from a combination of the increase in the amount of indigent care provided by the hospital and reductions in reimbursement by Medicare/Medicaid and commercial insurance.

Falling tree damages power lines and pole, fence

BUFFALO — Union County Emergency Services were dispatched to the 500 block of the John Hart Road in Buffalo around 4 p.m. Tuesday. A tree had fallen across the road, taking down power lines and a power line pole.Both the tree and the pole damaged the fence at the Recycling Convenience Center in that area.
