The Sims Tigers have been a dominant force in middle school wrestling and on Saturday, for the fourth consecutive year, were named Peachtree Conference Wrestling Champions.

The Tigers defeated 10 opposing teams by 60 total points in the tournament that was held in Boiling Springs. Five Sims wrestlers (Dre Glenn, A.J Hunter, Trevell Norman, Debo Woods and Luke Dill) qualified for the state tournament and will make the trip to Columbia on Saturday to compete.

“The kids wrestled hard this weekend, they went in there and competed,” said Sims Coach John Langenfeld. “We had 11 weight classes total in the finals and all those kids pretty much placed. The work ethic has been great all year and they’ve worked hard for this.”

As the four-time conference champ, Sims has had a target on its back all season.

“We told them, everybody would be gunning for them,” said Langenfeld. “It hasn’t been easy but they’ve done well.”

The Tigers have an unblemished record of 12-0 with two matches left before Saturday’s state championship. They’ll face Broome on the road tonight and host an undefeated Eastside squad for the season finale on Thursday.

While he’s proud of what the Tigers have accomplished thus far, Langenfeld is challenging his team to finish strong.

“The thing we want to do this week is finish what we started,” he said. “We congratulated them on what they’ve done up to this point but we’ve got two matches left. We can’t be satisfied with that conference championship. We want them to stay focused because we’re not done yet.”

Wrestlers who placed in Saturday’s tournament:

Quentin Audhtry: second, Luke Dill: first, Ty’keil Fleming: third, Dre Glenn: second, AJ Hunter: second Trevell Norman: second, LJ Thompson: third, Ty Woodruff: third, Debo Woods: first.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
