The Lady Jackets’ softball season came to an end on Thursday night when they suffered a 5-3 loss at the hands of Daniel. With the win, the Lions claimed the 3A Upperstate title.

Union County struck first, pushing a run across in the top of the first inning.

Pitcher Payton Martin drew a lead-off walk and received a courtesy runner. Kristin Giles took Martin’s place on first and Dexlie Inman moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Cece Moorman brought Giles in to score with an RBI single to right field and the Lady Jackets claimed the early lead.

Daniel answered quickly, plating four runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning for a 4-1 advantage.

The Jackets benefited from a couple of Daniel errors in the top of the third and closed the margin to 4-3 but the Lions tacked on a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single and held on for three more innings.

Carley Hoover picked up the win for Daniel. Hoover struck out 17 batters, walked four and allowed just one hit. Martin took the loss for Union County. She gave up seven hits with nine strikeouts and four walks.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
