UNION — An upcoming summer sports camp will allow local children an opportunity to play a sport of their choice while also participating in sports-oriented devotions from the Bible.
New Life Baptist Church will host its annual KICK (Kids in Christ Kingdom) Sports Camp from Monday, June 17-Friday, June 21 at Union County Stadium. The registration deadline is Saturday, June 1, and a registration event will take place that day at 2 p.m. in the Union County Stadium parking lot.
Boys and girls — ranging grades 1-6 — are eligible to participate and choose from four sports — soccer, cheer leading, football and baseball. The charge for the camp is $5 each, which includes a camp t-shirt and snacks each day.
Sports will be taught by experienced coaches, and the camp will be directed by New Life Youth Minister and local coach Todd Davis.
“Our Sports Camp is a high-energy, action-packed week of sports and God’s word,” Davis said.
Davis said a typical day of camp will begin with a check-in at 8:30 a.m. which will be followed by a time of praise and worship. Then, the children will hit the field to receive quality training in the sport of their choice. After a training session, the children will rest in huddle groups while teachers deliver a sports-oriented devotion from God’s word. After the devotion, children will rev back up for another training session. After the second training session, children will receive a snack and hear another devotion from the Bible. Then, they will hit the field yet again for their final training session of the day. During the final session, they will be placed in teams and play an actual game against other children participating in their sport of choice.
The three-hour program ends with a closing rally in which the focal points from the day’s lesson are revisited, and children will participate in more praise and worship through song before being dismissed.
“After one week they can leave here more fundamentally sound in the sport they choose to participate in, but our main goal is for them to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ,” Davis said.
Davis explained that the camp is centered around a particular theme each year, and this year’s theme is “Breaking Free.” Each day will focus on a different subject relating to the theme, including “Confidence: Break Free from Self-Doubt,” “Truth: Break Free from Lying,” “Wisdom: Break Free from Bad Choices,” “Teamwork: Break Free from Selfishness,” and “Faith: Break Free from Fear.”
