UNION — The approximately 300 senior citizens who attended the WBCU 15th Annual Senior Citizen’s Expo were entertained with live music, served lunch, and received information and gifts from the event’s sponsors.
The event, which was held Thursday in the Family Life Center of Tabernacle Baptist Church, is sponsored by WBCU to honor local senior citizens. The event featured live musical entertainment, lunch provided by Bojangles, and door prizes. In addition to WBCU, the expo had 20 other sponsors, all of whom had tables in the Family Life Center providing seniors with information on the services they offer. The sponsors also provided seniors with gifts and chances to win prizes.
WBCU General Manager Chris Woodson said the event was a success and he and the other sponsors are looking forward to the 2014 expo.
“I think it went very well, we had a good crowd who had a good time,” Woodson said. “Numbers were off just a little bit, but everybody had a good time.
“I want to thank everybody who came out,” he said. “I want to thank all of our sponsors. Everybody enjoyed the food from Bojangles. We’re looking forward to planning our sixteenth annual event next year.”
The expo’s other sponsors also had nothing but praise for event.
“It’s always a big success,” Arthur State Bank Vice President Monte Lancaster said. “It’s a good crowd, good entertainment, and it’s nice for the seniors.”
Penny Adamo, Community Relations Liaison for Hospice Care of South Carolina, said the expo provided seniors with an opportunity to learn about the services available to them.
“I think it’s wonderful,” Adamo said. “A lot of the public has come out. They’re getting a lot of information about what our Union community has to offer.”
Paul Winters, Local Area Manager for Woodmen of the World, said the expo was an excellent opportunity to communicate with the county’s senior citizens.
“It’s done real well, we’ve been able to get our message out to our senior adults about the insurance and investment products we have to offer,” Winters said. “I had a new field representing working with me — Valerie Johnson — and introducing her to the community.”
Thursday was the first time Blue Ridge Hospice had participated in the expo.
“We’re had a great day,” Community Relations Coordinator Amanda Gallman said. “It gives the seniors an opportunity to come and see the resources available.”
Janie Harvey, Coordinator of Education and Staff Development at Wallace Thomson Hospital, said the expo enabled seniors to receive some important health care information.
“It’s been excellent, we’ve been really busy,” Harvey said. “We’ve distributed a large amount of educational material on various health topics. We’ve identified some community members with high blood pressure and we’ve scheduled a good many mammograms.”
