Crime Report

The Union Public Safety Department reported the following arrest:

— Rahim Jamar Jeter, 33, of 409 South Church Street, Union, was charged with driving under suspension around 9:45 a.m. on Jan. 15.

The Union Public Safety Department reported the following incident:

— The manager of Fairforest Apartments, located at 221 East Main Street, Union, reported on Jan. 15 that a back door to the office — which was supposed to be locked — was open. She then noticed the office desk had been rambled through, and items missing included keys to the laundry room and $92 in cash. Investigation of the matter will continue.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

— A resident of Mt. Lebanon Road, Buffalo, reported on Jan. 15 that she received a call that morning from a female who advised her she had won money from Publisher’s Clearing House. The caller said representatives from the company were on the way to the house, but to collect, the woman would have to put $180 on a Green Dot card to cover taxes for the money she had allegedly won. Realizing it was a scam, the victim called 911 to report it. She said she received a second call from the same number, and the caller said someone was on the way to the residence. Officers told her that if anyone showed up, she should call 911 and deputies would speak with them.

— A resident of Old Ferry Road, Union, reported on Jan. 15 that a 12-foot john boat, which he had left on a bank at Little Brown’s Creek, was missing. The victim stated he checked on the boat approximately 10 days prior and it was still there, but when he checked on Jan. 15, it was missing. He also stated the boat had been at that location for approximately three months. The boat was valued at $300.

— An employee of the Buffalo Post Office reported on Jan. 15 that one of the mail couriers observed two Dollar General shopping carts in a wooded area on the 400 block of Duncan Ave. Both were filled with old glass bottles, rusted tin cans and bags of what appeared to be pine needles. One of the carts appeared to have been burned, and the other appeared to be in good condition. An officer advised the manager of the nearby Dollar General store of the situation, and she said she would contact the district manager to find out if they wanted the carts back or to disregard them. The carts are valued at $100 each.

— A resident of Smyrna, South Carolina reported on Jan. 15 that while attending a sporting event at Jonesville Middle School on Jan. 14, her daughter’s cell phone was stolen out of her gym bag. She said she left the service on to see if there would be any activity, and she said she contacted Alltel and was told there had been messages sent and data used.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
