Logan Wade, a product of Union County High School, capped off an impressive freshman year as a Pioneer when she received Region’s 10 First Team All-Region honors.

Wade, a third baseman at Spartanburg Methodist College, helped Union County to a Region 3-3A softball championship last year. She and the Pioneers came up one win short at the Region 10 tournament this year but finished with a 20-2 record, (39-13 overall) to earn the regular season title.

“I was very upset that we finished runners-up because we expected to win,” said Wade. “Our team was so close and we had a great season together. It just inspired me to work even harder to be ready for next year’s season.”

In the tournament finale, SMC squared off with Pitt Community College. The Pioneers knotted the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth on a 2-run homer by Lacey Leary but an RBI single in the top of the seventh led to a 4-3 win for Pitt, along with the Region 10 championship.

Wade contributed one of SMC’s four hits with a single in the third inning.

“My first year of college was a great experience,” she said. “It was a big transition from high school to college softball. I worked out and ran a lot more to stay in shape and I had to organize my time to keep my grades up.”

Wade, a starter at UCHS since her freshman year, didn’t immediately take over third base upon arriving at SMC. She and Rebeka Smith of Laurens High School were rotated at the position until Wade claimed a regular starting role just prior to region play.

“Working for my spot took a lot of time and effort but it certainly paid off in the end,” said Wade. “I didn’t play much in the fall but the spring was a whole different story and it changed my outlook on college softball. I loved it once I earned my spot.”

Wade said that SMC Head Coach Thad Fox was instrumental in her growth this year.

“He gave me chances to prove myself and earn my spot,” she explained. “He really pushed me to work hard.”

Wade was one of six Pioneers to be selected to the All-Region team.

She finished the season with a 2.98 batting average and a .941 fielding percentage. She racked up 22 RBI with three home runs and 14 runs scored in 39 appearances.

“Making All-Region was a big surprise for me,” said Wade. “I worked hard all year and it was a great honor to get noticed for it.”

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
