LOCKHART — Precipitation records were broken in Lockhart after rain on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
According to a representative from the National Weather Service (NWS), Lockhart was the biggest reporting site in Union County after three days of rain. The daily precipitation record was broken after the town received 2.75 inches of rainfall on Monday. NWS representatives estimated 2.8 inches of total rainfall over the three days.
Although there were no river gauge readings in Union County, the NWS provided readings from the Broad River in nearby Blacksburg, which had a crest height of just under 20 feet, which was classified at a “minor flood stage.” Just downstream in Boiling Springs — closer to Union County — the crest height was 14.78 feet, which was classified at a “moderate flood stage.”
“So there was definitely downstream flooding,” said an NWS representative, pointing out that Lockhart would most likely also be classified at a moderate flood level. “In general we saw very significant rises, and Broad River was definitely in moderate flood levels. A lot of smaller creeks definitely overflowed.”
Those creek overflows were apparent in Union as sections of roads including River Road and Boat Landing Road were closed Monday due to flooding.
