UNION COUNTY — A tradition of support that began more than 50 years ago continued Tuesday as the Union Rotary Club donated $400 to the Dixie Youth League.
Rotary President Neil Howell presented Dixie Youth League President Tommy Ford with a check for $400 during the club’s monthly meeting at Covenant Baptist Church.
“We’ve been funding it for over 50 years,” Howell said. “We feel it is a healthy alternative for our young people to being out on the street.”
Rotary supports Dixie Youth as well as the Summer Reading Program, The Potters Storehouse, Boy Scouts, and the 4-H Club with funds it raises during the year through its ongoing Aluminum Recycling Project and its annual Low Country Boil.
Ford also pointed to Rotary’s long support of the Dixie Youth League.
“The money is used to sponsor a team,” Ford said. “Mike Anthony, Tommy Simmons and I, we all played for the Rotary team back in 1959, 1960, and 1961. They’ve been sponsoring a team for over 54 years and the money has always been there for us.
“We appreciate sponsors like Rotary and others who’ve been there a long time,” he said. “It’s nice to know you’ve got good people like that.”
