UNION — Every day, Nursing Assistants provide as much as 90 percent of the care received by residents in nursing homes, hospitals and other long-term care settings. The 36th Annual National Nursing Assistants Week (June 13-23) is a special week to recognize the efforts and dedication of these important health care workers. In keeping with this emphasis, the official spotlight for the 36th Annual National Nursing Assistants’ Week is “Nursing Assistants @ the Heart of Care ©.”
More than 1,000 nursing assistants, home care aides, hospital aides, restorative aides, hospice aides and other direct care workers live and work in South Carolina. Each nursing assistant is a “Key Player” in the lives of the people in her/his care. Change is everywhere in health care today and every NA has an important role in working with others to create the changes that will benefit all. Nursing assistants are called in to develop new skills in person centered care, electronic reporting, and to prevent re-hospitalizations as well as provide for safety in the care setting.
“The well being and happiness of these citizens depend in large part on the nursing assistants, home care aides, and others who provide as much as 85-90 percent of daily, conscientious, hands-on care in their homes, nursing homes and other long term care settings,” said Dawn Gault, Patient Care Coordinator for the Union office of Hospice Care of South Carolina. “Their value in this community is immeasurable.”
Locally, in honor of National Nursing Assistants’ Week, HCSC will celebrate with a focus on their highly trained staff of nursing assistants who provide specialized care to patients at end-of-life. Nursing Assistants bring wisdom, patience, humor and a general attitude of caring to the daily lives of families.
Statewide, HCSC employs nearly 40 percent of all certified hospice and palliative care licensed nurses. In 2012, HCSC, the state’s leading hospice care provider, received the National Employer of the Year Award from the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses.
