Nearly fifteen years ago, my parents dropped me off me off at Spartanburg Methodist College. Before they pulled away, my dad handed me a little notebook, some of the contents of which I decided to share. These are merely a few of the things that a father worries about when his child leaves home for the first time; even when she will be less than an hour away.
Excerpts:
Try to make good decisions. I know you won’t always make the right ones, and we will work the mistakes out together, as a family. Always think things out first and then make your decisions; they will not always be easy.
If you start feeling pressure and not wanting to play softball, you can always stop. But before you quit, always give it one more chance. You’ll probably find that you like it just the same because it is a game and games are made to have FUN in.
But don’t even think about quitting school because your education will make your future life much easier.
Make a work study habit and stick to it…Study a little each day first and then play, because in college there will always be someone out on campus to do something with.
You can always ask for help with studying or on something you don’t understand.
I hope you never get sick, but if you do, call us and we’ll do what needs to be done — either come get you or tell you what to do over the phone.
After there’s been a storm up there, call to let us know everything is okay.
Take care of your money; spend it wisely and don’t buy something you don’t need. You’ll have your snacks and you will be able to eat in the lunchroom, you just won’t be able to eat out all the time or go to the mall and buy things.
Car: Always lock your car and park in a well-lit area.
I think you know not to let anyone borrow your car…You’ll worry yourself to death till the car is back safe so the bottom line and top line is no one uses your car and you don’t use it as a taxi.
Getting homesick: Yes, you will be homesick for a while but you couldn’t miss us anymore than I miss you…It will take time for all of us to get used to this and we will always look forward to seeing each other on weekends or any other day when you want to come home or you want us to come up to see you, or just a short phone call…Or maybe you will never get homesick.
If you need to talk with mom or me, just call…Its going to be hard for a couple of weeks, missing your home, friends and family but you will get used to it…
Have a good and safe time in college!
