UNION COUNTY — The Union County Sheriff’s Office and Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office is working on a joint investigation into a crime spree that stretches across the two counties.

At 8:33 a.m. on Tuesday, Union County Dispatch received a call about a wreck and car fire in the area of 300 Pulpwood Yard Road. When officers arrived on scene, two subjects — Thomas Milon Campbell, 32, and Anna Paige Sanders, 24, both of 710 White Stone Road, Spartanburg — who were still on the scene told officers they were passengers in the wrecked vehicle and that the driver of the vehicle had jumped out and ran into the woods. The officers also observed Campbell and Sanders throwing white pills into the woods as well. The two were detained and frisked.

During frisking, the officers located three handguns on Campbell and an empty holster on Sanders. In addition to the burning vehicle, the officers also noticed guns, a flat screen television and other items around the vehicle that looked out of place. When the fire was extinguished, the vehicle identification number was run which revealed that the vehicle had been entered into NCIC by the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office as stolen.

Due to the allegations of a third subject running into the woods, the Union County Sheriff’s Office bloodhound unit was called to the scene. Once K-9 did a perimeter search and did not pick up a scent of a third individual, Campbell and Sanders were questioned again and admitted to officers that they were the only two people in the vehicle and had lied to officers in an attempt to keep themselves out of trouble. They were read their Miranda rights and separated and during further investigation, it was determined that one of the firearms found on Campbell was stolen and deputies believe the pair may have been involved in a burglary.

Deputies discovered that a residence had been broken into on Lemonade Road where a television was stolen. Also at approximately 11:21 a.m., a residence on Jeffries Farm Road was reported broken into. During this time, Campbell and Sanders were arrested and transported to the Union County Jail. During the interrogation process, investigators determined that the wrecked vehicle had been intentionally set on fire and destroyed.

Also while on scene, deputies were able to recover plastic containers that they believe had been used by Campbell and Sanders to manufacture methamphetamine using the “shake and bake” method.

Campbell and Sanders are each charged with two counts of burglary first-degree and petit larceny, arson third-degree, and manufacturing Methamphetamine.

All items stolen during the burglaries have been recovered by the Union County Sheriff’s Office. The recovered items include rifles, pistols, swords, a skill saw, and a flat screen TV.

Later in the afternoon, Sheriff David Taylor and deputies were dispatched to the jail in reference to a disturbance. A female jail officer told deputies that during a conversation, Sanders became irate and started striking her in the face, causing scratches on her face and that Sanders attempted to choke her. The jail officer also advised deputies that Sanders had spit on her several times during the incident. Sanders was then charged with assault and battery third-degree and the throwing of bodily fluids by a prisoner.

Campbell and Sanders have been denied bond and are still in jail. Taylor said they also face charges in Spartanburg County in connection with two automobile thefts. He said the investigation is continuing in both counties.
