Hello everyone, lots of local news to talk about. so lets do our birthday wishes fresh from the cell phone of “Gottrocks The Birthday Fairy.”

Happy Birthday wishes to Julia Wessinger, Christianna Gilliam, Jackie Goins, Joseph Brown, Joyce Hunnicutt, Jessie Crumpton, Kem King, Beth G. Bright, Gail Vanlue, Amy Crumley, Loraine Long, Maria Dickerson, Johnny Tankersley, and Marcus Lindsay. Happy Birthday to our former residents Richard Bowling and Ronald Bolin.

Sympathy

On a sad note, we send our best wishes and sympathy to the families of Mrs. Lois Lucille Mobley Davidson. “Miss Lois” was an Atlanta Braves fan, she and her daughter George were Whitmire’s Biggest Lady Braves Fans. Miss Lois taught and served as principal in Union County Schools for 30 years. She is also survived by her grandsons and her special nieces.

Upcoming News And Events

Whitmire Community School activities last week included registration, senior pictures, and a football jamboree at Newberry High School.

This week, Aug. 14, Friday night football kicks off in Wolverine Stadium, located on the corner of Union Street and Golf Alley.

Monday, Aug. 20, school starts! Grades K-12 will begin the first day of class on this date. Aug. 23 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. is Open House, also the first day of Pre-K students.

The Varsity Wolverines take on Blacksburg and McCormick in a scrimmage at 6 p.m. Friday. Aug. 24 is the start of regular season as the Wolves take on Great Falls at 7:30 p.m. in Wolverine Stadium.

Friday, Aug. 31, the Wolves versus North Central. Activities include halftime inductions into the Whitmire High School Athletic Hall Of Fame.

Sept. 14, The Wolves host McCormick and halftime activities include the Homecoming ceremonies. The school has a Facebook page as well as their webpage on the districts’ website.

The Whitmire Jaycees plan to host a “Good Old Fashioned Stump Meeting,” Oct. 23 at the Community Center located beside Heritage Park. Candidates from surrounding counties are invited to attend and participate in a debate. Feel free to contact the Jaycees at their website or Facebook group page.

Church News

The First Baptist Church “Young At Heart Club” will have their meeting Tuesday, Aug. 10:30 a.m. in the social hall. Martha Coleman and Loraine Long are the hostesses. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish item. “Men Sharpening Men” will meet at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 21, and 28 at Pearl’s Café for breakfast.

The church will celebrate its 225th year Oct. 14 during the 11 a.m. service. This event attracts former members, music directors and ministers. A covered dish luncheon after the service in the social hall.

People In The News

John Champion and his family members recently visited the studios of WIS-TV in Columbia. The Whitmire visitors were treated to a tour of the TV studios where John met weatherman John Farley and News Anchor Dawny Mercer Plank. John also had the chance to stay and watch them do the news live. While there, John sang his favorite gospel songs to the staff.
