UNION — Children in the Union County Recreation Department’s after-school program enjoyed participating in a new craft activity.
They soaked paper shreds in warm water to make paper pulp. Next, they drew designs on newspaper for their creations and made their own screens out of clothes hangers and pantyhose. They put the screen over the design drawn on the newspaper and piled the paper pulp on top. After pressing out the extra water, they placed watermelon seeds inside their creations.
After the recycled paper dried, they took it home, and this spring they can plant their biodegradable paper and have watermelon plants at home.
