UNION COUNTY — Bess Lawson is 2012-2013 Miss Union County High School, and Evan Haney is 2012-2013 Mr. Union County High School.
The 2012-2013 Miss UCHS Pageant was held Saturday in the UCHS cafetorium. Runners-up included Kayce Edwards, first runner-up; Brittany Moore, second runner-up; Dezstiny Woodard, third runner-up; and Andrea Byrd, fourth runner-up.
Lawson — the daughter of Union County School District teachers Ralph and Janet Lawson — said she thoroughly enjoyed her participation in this year’s pageant.
“Since we didn’t have as many girls in the pageant this year, we all became really close and got along really well,” Lawson said. “I had a lot of fun.”
The pageant included four parts — an interview which took place before the actual pageant, an opening number during which the contestants introduced themselves, a casual wear competition and an evening wear competition.
During the interview, three judges asked each contestant nine questions about their involvement at school, their friends and what would make them a good representative of UCHS. Lawson said she told the judges she would be a good representative because she has been part of several different aspects of the school. She has taken advanced placement and honors courses, which have familiarized her with the academic aspect of UCHS. She has also participated in both GT Drama and GT Music during all four years of high school, giving her experience in the UCHS Fine Arts Department, with which she has been somewhat familiar for her entire life as the daughter of longtime drama teacher Ralph Lawson. She is also a former cheerleader, which falls under UCHS athletics.
Lawson said her favorite part of the pageant was getting to know her fellow contestants even better, learning more about who they are and what they represent. Lawson’s only previous pageant experience was when she participated in the Miss Sims Jr. High pageant, which she won when she was in seventh grade.
Lawson’s extracurricular activities include National Honor Society, Interact and the International Thespian Society. She is currently in rehearsals for the drama department’s upcoming production of “Seussical.” Aside from school, Lawson dances with Ultimate Rhythm Dance Company each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
For the Mr. UCHS portion of the pageant, teachers voted for a student who they felt represents the school well and is a good role model. The winner was Evan Haney. Lawson said that Haney is one of her best friends and is very deserving of the award.
“He makes good grades; he’s nice to everyone; and he has been in GT Music with me all four years,” Lawson said. “Every teacher likes Evan.”
