UNION — The Union County Health Care Foundation will sponsor the Christmas Tour of Homes 2012 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1.
Each of the six stops on the tour will be spotlighted and the spotlight is on Hill Home, 101 Owings Drive, Union, the home of Ken and Emily Hill.
This lovely Georgian-styled brick home was built between 1951 and 1953 by Dr. and Mrs. Francis P. Owings. Sitting on 1 1/2 landscaped acres, the house features three bedrooms and two baths upstairs and a guest suite downstairs.
The foyer opens to a formal living room which flows into a formal dining room on the right and a glass sun porch on the left. To the right of the foyer is a small library and a hallway which continues to a butler’s pantry.
The large, light kitchen connects the main body of the house to a large family room, converted from a garage when the Owings’ daughters were in their teens.
The master bedroom and living room have fireplaces which center the rooms.
The woodwork in the home is lovely, as are the red oak floors. The gardens are filled with camellias and azaleas, large oaks and pines, crepe myrtle, and magnolias.
The home was bought in 2005 by Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hill. The new owners have chosen to keep the home as close to the original as possible while updating basic systems. Mrs. Owings was an interior designer and the home reflects her abilities in its grace and proportion.
Dr. and Mrs. Hill, together with their son and daughter, have lived and travelled in areas ranging from the southwestern United States to Europe. The artwork, porcelains, and other appointments reflect these journeys. Many of the porcelains are from northern Italy as well as Sweden, England, France, Germany and New Mexico.
The paintings reflect the family’s travels and desire to find and support local artists and artisans as well as encompassing the family’s appreciation for historical and noteworthy art from around the world. Many of the furnishings are family pieces; and the Steinway piano in the living room was a gift from Dr. Hill to his wife.
Music will be featured during the tour and visitors are invited to join in welcoming the season with song.
