UNION — One outdoorman’s dream came true this month when he won the Union County Healthcare Foundation’s “2012 Outdoorsman’s Dream Biggest Buck Competition.”

The Union County Health Care Foundation is a network of citizens whose goal is to identify and secure additional funding to supplement the efforts of Wallace Thomson Hospital, Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, Union County EMS and the medical community of Union County in providing high quality, cost effective health care.

The purpose of the foundation is to raise funds through charitable donations and fund raising events like the Biggest Buck Competition, which will be applied to the health care needs of the citizens of Union County.

Helping the foundation raise those funds is why Jantzen Childers, the winner of the 2012 Biggest Buck Competition, said he participates in the competition and why he gave the $250 in prize money he won back to the foundation.

“The money I left with the foundation,” Childers said. “I always get in these things just to help the foundation out.”

The deer Childers shot was a 6 pointer with a rack spread of 14 1/2 inches.

“He would have been an 8 pointer but he was damaged on the right side,” Childers said Monday. “I shot it on Broad River in York County back in November. I’m a member of Bullock Creek Hunt Club.”

In addition to the prize money, the winner of the Biggest Buck Competition receives a trophy.

This year’s Biggest Buck Competition was sponsored by Ashley Turner State Farm.

William Jeter, foundation vice chairman, congratulated Childers and pointed out that all the funds raised through Biggest Buck will go to support the district in its efforts to provide health care services for the people of Union County.

“Congratulations goes to Jantzen Childers for slaying the biggest buck and assuming all bragging rights. As always the foundation used a hundred of all fundraising to support the Union County Hospital District. Not many foundations or non-profits like we are can say that.”
