JONESVILLE — They served soup in the fall and now the members of the Women’s Bible Study Class at Oakbrook Community Church are continuing their ministry of service by serving a spaghetti meal to the needy of the community.

In October, the members of the class, with help from family members and their church family, set up a soup kitchen and fed approximately 80 people.

The soup kitchen grew out of a Bible study called “40 Days In The Word,” which encouraged the class to undertake a group project based on Micah 6:8. The verse reads, “He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

The class decided that the best way to put those words into action was by feeding people and so they began their food ministry with their soup kitchen.

On Saturday, the class will continue its food ministry by serving spaghetti meals its 11 members will cook in their homes.

“The members will be making it at home and bring it to the church,” class leader Deborah Henderson said. “We are preparing between 80 and 100 meals. Some of it we may have to cook at the church, especially if we run out of noodles, but most of it will already be prepared. We will also serve salad and bread and a dessert.”

While most of the meals will be for takeout or dine-in at the church, Henderson said some will be delivered.

“We’re delivering some to people that are shut-ins,” Henderson said. “We will also deliver some in the housing projects.”

Henderson said the class is hoping to continue it food ministry on a monthly basis and for the same reason they had the soup kitchen.

“The Bible study was about what the Lord requires of us and we thought about what we could do to do what he requires of us,” Henderson said. “We thought if people were fed they would have more opportunity to hear about God. The service itself is the message. Come and feel welcome.”

The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Oakbrook Community Church, 520 Alman St., Jonesville.
