UNION COUNTY — While one Union County team begins its season, another team will be honored for a championship season which concluded in the spring.
Members of the Union County Yellow Jackets softball team will be presented with their AAA State Championship rings during halftime of tonight’s Union County vs. Gaffney varsity football game at Union County Stadium.
The Lady Jackets claimed their state championship after winning back-to-back games against Hartsville in the spring, sweeping the two-out-of-three-game championship series.
The team finished with a 26-3 record and a .370 batting average with 31 home runs in 29 games. After stats were collected from MaxPreps, the Lady Jackets finished No. 1 throughout the entire state of South Carolina — in all divisions — and were No. 28 in the nation.
Coach Tommy Petty said he was appreciative of the way fans in Union County showed their support by coming out in droves to attend the team’s games in the spring.
UCHS Principal Floyd Lyles praised the team for setting a great example for other athletes in the school by staying humble and excelling academically.
Team members include Abbie Valentine, Ashley Vinson, Bailey Betenbaugh, Cara Phillips, Cassie Horne, CeCe Morman, Clarissa Hughes, Dexlie Inman, Hannah Sailors, Jazemyn Boyd, Karlie Lane, Katelyn Petty, Kendell Henderson, Kristin Kicidis, Payton Martin and Satardra Hall.
