UNION — During a weekend tournament, a local travel softball team qualified to play in the ASA 14U National Championship in San Diego.

Third Degree — a travel softball team of 14-year-olds who play in weekend tournaments against ages 14-18 — played in the ASA/USA 14U national qualifier at Tyger River Complex in Spartanburg last weekend. Coached by Shane Wallace, of Gaffney, and Tommy Petty, of Union, the team won their pool game and first bracket game on Friday night. On Saturday night, they won their first game and lost the second in the double-elimination tournament.

The team then won five straight games — with rest times in between of less than 15 minutes each — going 15-0 and 12-1, qualifying the team for the national championship game.

One parent said the girls — and the parents — were exhausted, sweaty, dirty, proud and on an adrenaline high at the end of the tournament.

Parents are currently looking at the costs to get the team to California.
