UNION COUNTY — Union County Yellow Jacket Wrestling came away victorious after a tournament at Crescent High School.
Union County went 4-0 in the tournament on Saturday, defeating Belton Honea Path, Crescent, Westside and Greenville.
The Yellow Jackets’ win came down to a championship match against BHP, with Union County’s Luis Gallegos left to wrestle. Gallegos looked for revenge as he took on an opponent to whom he lost in an overtime match earlier in the season. Gallegos won by points, giving Union County a 39-36 victory.
Coach G.B. McDaniel said it was an awesome day for the Union County wrestling program.
“I’m so proud of the guys for their effort,” McDaniel said. “We did all this while having three forfeits. We’ve got lots of work left to do, but the team is sticking together. We are reaching our goals, and we are going to work to make this the best season ever in Yellow Jacket wrestling history!”
McDaniel also said congratulations are in order for Tykeil Fleming, who qualified for JV state competition by going undefeated on Saturday. McDaniel also noted that Drey Glenn qualified for middle school state competition for the second consecutive year.
