UNION — The Dollar General Vikings became the 2013 Union County Recreation Department Stinger Football Champions after winning Wednesday night’s championship game against the Timken Steelers.
The first points on the board during the championship game came from the Timken Steelers’ No. 38 Jabari Meadow. The two-point conversion was no good, giving the Steelers a 6-0 lead.
The Dollar General Vikings answered with a touchdown run from No. 14 Keesean Glover. The PAT was good, and the Vikings took an 8-6 lead.
Both teams’ defenses prevented scoring throughout the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Vikings’ Tarik Briggs caught an interception, and Meadow scored another touchdown. With the PAT, the score was 16-6 in favor of the Vikings.
The Steelers’ Keesean Glover returned the kick for another touchdown, making the score 16-14.
After an interception by the Vikings’ No. 22 Colby Gregory, the Vikings were able to run down the clock and pick up the championship win.
The Dollar General Vikings roster is as follows:
Keion Glover, Kesean Glover, Andrew Treadway, Justin Hall, Colby Gregory, Cedric Curenton, Keavis Savage, Kee’Sean Thompson, Garry Savage, Cameron Jett, Brett Gregory, O’marian Glenn, Dre’Shawn Hardy, Jaderian Smith, Cain Foster, Jake Sumner, Tarik Briggs, Michael Dinneen, Shyheem Smith, Isaiah Gore, CJ Coleman, and Nazir Savage. Recreation Department Athletic Director Sam Phipps said this season has been a good one.
“The kids improve every game,” Phipps said. “Each child seems to enjoy themselves as they learn about football. The coaches have done a great job.”
The Union County Recreation Department offers flag and Stinger football — as well as recreational cheer leading — each year, with sign-ups beginning in July. The department is now gearing up to start basketball.
