SANTUC — Over 100 entries from Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, and Tennessee brought their crews and families to the county of Union this past weekend, all looking to leave Union County Dragway on Sunday with the big win. It happened for several drivers as five categories were available for racers to give it their best.

In what possibly could have been the largest payout in Junior Dragster history on the East coast ($1,500 to win), veteran driver Michael Hipp took the finals honors in Bracket 1. As it turns out, even with over 50 drivers in the category, it came down to Hipp, and his girlfriend, Toni Salsgiver, in the final, with Dad, Craig Hipp, tuning for both machines. The semifinalists included Haley Barbee and Clint Gordon.

The racing highlight of the weekend came on Saturday night as 16 entries tried to qualify for an Outlaw 330, Quick 8 heads up field, run to the 330 mark (half track). Teams were scrambling to find the lightest, yet experienced drivers to pair up with the most powerful machines to gain the advantage.

In an atmosphere that rivaled a Pro Mod show, it all came down to Jake Tucker, wheeling a quick machine for Andrew Shelton (recent Darlington Pro Am finalist himself), and Samantha Hollingsworth, who drove two cars into the semifinals. Tucker picked up the win posting an amazing 4.41 at the 330 mark. The semifinalists were Zach Pennington and Hollingsworth driving her other entry.

With parents junior races, golf cart races, and all drivers receiving a free event T-shirt, the weekend was filled with entertainment and focus on the next generation of drag racers and their families. Look for this event to return in 2014 on an even larger scale.

Union County Dragway will be open for testing this Saturday, Nov. 9 from noon until 5 p.m. The next big event will be Nov. 23-24 which includes racing and the year end awards banquet. Go to www.unioncountyscdragway.com for information.
