The Sims Middle School 7th and 8th grade football teams celebrated gridiron triumphs on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

8th Grade

GAFFNEY — The Sims Tigers 8th grade football team picked up a 42-14 win over the Granard Warriors from Gaffney on Thursday.

The win came by way of what Coach Mitchell Moss referred to as an offensive showcase led by Bryan Good. Good threw four touchdowns and a two-point conversion, with over 250 total yards passing. Good connected with Dudley Thompson for a 70-yard touchdown pass and John Addison for a 40-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion run by Aaron Parham gave Sims a 14-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.

The Warriors then came right back with two possessions in a row to tie the game 14-14. After some adjustments by the Sims defense, however, the Warriors’ offense was stopped the rest of the game.

“There were some chippy plays in the game,” Moss said. “They had two players ejected and I was proud of our players for keeping their composure and not retaliating.”

Other highlights included Addison and Caleb Vanderford each catching a touchdown pass, as well as a two-point conversion from Vanderford in the second half. Jaden Bates recovered a fumble and ran a reverse for a 40-yard touchdown. Sammy Brannon came in at QB and ran in a 60-yard touchdown, with Jerome Henry adding a two-point conversion.

Moss said the offensive line did an excellent job of opening up the running lanes and giving the quarterbacks time.

“There are still four games left in the season,” Moss said. “We have to remain focused and continue to work on fundamentals.”

7th Grade

UNION — On Wednesday, the Sims Tigers 7th grade football team picked up its first win of the season by shutting out the Granard Warriors with a final score of 30-0.

“Overall it was the best game of the season for our 7th grade team, and they dominated!” said Coach Mitchell Moss.

The game began with QB Jordan Kershaw connecting with Quez Smith for a 50-yard touchdown, with T.T. Kershaw running in the two-point conversion.

“T.T. was the player of the game on both sides of the ball,” Moss said, pointing out that Kershaw scored three touchdowns and two two-point conversions, as well as catching a big interception while on defense.

Max stokes also caught a two-point conversion, and Cedrekius Neal ran in a 12-yard touchdown.

Moss said the team’s defensive stats were also impressive, as the defense caused five turnovers, giving the ball back to the Sims offense and preventing the Granard offense from collecting any positive yards.

“In fact the defense gave up exactly negative 21 yards!” Moss said. “They sent the other team going backwards all night.”

Moss said the defensive success was thanks in part to Cameron Lott who played in the backfield all night, getting a sack or multiple tackles for a loss. Other turnovers were recovered or caused by Preston Garrett, Justin Reed and Bam Bam Rice. The game ended with an interception by Tyree Ruth.

“It was great to see the guys come out focused and determined,” Moss said. “They finally showed up and played to their potential. This is something to build on.”
