UNION COUNTY — On Saturday, March 22, the Union County High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble competed at the SCBDA (South Carolina Band Director’s Association) Winter Ensemble State Championships, marking the group’s first year of participation in the State Championship competition.
Union County won its first state championship, with the top three being rounded out by two Class 5A schools, Ashley Ridge and West Ashley, respectively (indoor percussion groups compete together regardless of school size or classification).
Thus far, the 2014 season has been a remarkably successful one, beginning with a win at the first contest, a top five finish at a WGI (Winter Guard International) Regional event, a second-place finish, and another win last week at TL Hanna High School.
The UCHS Indoor Percussion Ensemble will compete at the CIPA (Carolina Indoor Performance Association) Championships this Sunday, March 30, at Western Carolina University against groups from Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
Following the CIPA Championships, the Indoor Percussion Ensemble will travel to Dayton, Ohio to compete in the WGI World Championships against schools from all over the country and the world, including several groups which will make the trip from Thailand. This trip will be another first for the ensemble as they attempt to expand their competitive success nationally.
The ensemble would like to thank the Union County School administration, the parents, and the community for continued support.
