UNION — Thursday’s Christmas Open House is being called a success by the executive director of the Union County Chamber of Commerce who said the event drew a large crowd that enjoyed an evening of food, entertainment and shopping.

Christmas Open House is the traditional start of the holiday shopping season for the businesses on Main Street in downtown Union. The event gets its name from Main Street businesses keeping their doors open later into the evening to allow the public the opportunity to shop as well as win prizes and receive treats.

In addition to downtown businesses, local churches, organizations and other businesses also participated, lining the street with tables filled with food and other items for sale.

The Union County Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event in cooperation with Main Street merchants and Chamber Executive Director Torance Inman said it was a success for the businesses and other vendors that participated.

“Christmas Open House was a huge success for the downtown,” Inman said Friday. “The businesses appeared to have a large increase in traffic in the stores.

“The arts council had over 400 visitors and the museum had over 700 visitors,” he said. “All the other vendors and churches who had food and crafts indicated they had a successful evening.”

Inman said that not only did the businesses and other vendors have a good evening, those who attended to take advantage of the food, entertainment and shopping opportunities also enjoyed themselves.

“The spectators that were there for the music and dance also appeared to have a good time,” Inman said. “The crowd appeared to be larger than in the past. We had a good number of individuals who stayed and rode the carriages right up to 9 o’clock.”

Inman thanked all those who made Christmas Open House a success.

“We’re extremely pleased and we’d like to say a special thanks to the vendors and the businesses,” Inman said. “We’d like to also say a special thanks to Union Public Safety for its support, they ensured we had a safe, fun evening for all.”
