UNION — The attendance at this year’s Union County Agricultural Fair was even with last year’s attendance, despite threats of inclement weather on Thursday and Saturday.

With no major issues to overcome during the week, Union County Fair Director Paul Winters said this year’s fair was the smoothest running fair he has experienced since serving as director.

“Overall, it was very successful,” Winters said, mentioning that board members and the carnival provider were very happy with the attendance from the community.

Winters added that this year’s headline attraction — Kachunga and the Alligator Show — was a huge success, performing for a standing-room-only audience each night.

Winters also said the community responded well to the Texaco Country Showdown state finals, which were held at the Union County Fair for the first time this year. Nine contestants competed, representing country radio stations from throughout North Carolina and South Carolina. At the end of the night, the winner was Casey Sutton, who won the regional contest sponsored by WBCU in May. This weekend, Sutton will travel to Hershey, Pa. to compete in the Northeast Regional Finals at Hershey Park.

Winters also said he was pleased with other attractions such as Mister Greggy and Trans-South Wrestling, and he called the Hogway Speedway this year’s surprise attraction.

“The Hogway Speedway really was an enjoyable, family-oriented attraction,” Winter said, pointing out that entire families enjoyed watching the pigs and ducks race at the Hogway Speedway each night of the fair.

Last week, results from rabbit, poultry, agricultural and home ec. shows were printed in The Union Daily Times. Look for the results from other fair shows as they become available in The Union Daily Times and at www.uniondailytimes.com.
