UNION — The Union County Arts Council will announce the winners of the 2013 Juried Art Show today at an awards reception to be held at the main building on the USC-Union campus. This show is the culmination of the season for UCAC and has become one of the state’s most prestigious events.
“We are always thrilled with the quality of entries in our juried art show,” said UCAC president Bennie Giles. “This year was no exception. Anyone who takes a few minutes to wander the halls of this beautiful building will find some of the finest art in the southeast on display.”
The man who had the unenviable task of choosing the winners of the eight awards sponsored by Wallace Thomson Hospital, United Wood Treating Company, Frank Hart Allstate Insurance Company, Timken Tyger River Plant, Arthur State Bank, Union Family Pharmacy, the Switzer Family and Mrs. W.J. Whitener admitted to having a hard time making his choices.
“This was a very hard competition to judge,” said UCAC’s juror Diarmuid Kelly. “The seventy paintings on display covered a broad range of mediums and techniques but as always, there were some that just stood out.”
The ninth award, and probably the most special because of the way that it is chosen, is the Bill McCall People’s Choice Award donated by Eleanora Richardson. Everyone in attendance at the reception will be given a ballot to use to vote for his or her favorite piece. The People’s Choice will be awarded based upon the results of the voting.
The reception will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and People’s Choice votes will be taken until 6:30.
Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.
