UNION — A birthday is always a special occassion, but Margarette Greer’s birthday was made even more special by the celebration organized by her family at Oakmont Residential Care Center.
Family and friends came together with staff members and residents of the center to wish Greer a happy 90th birthday. No birthday celebration is ever complete without birthday gifts and there was a table full of them Wednesday afternoon. While those gifts were for Greer and the celebration was in her honor, the party was also a gift from Greer to her fellow residents.
“She wanted a party at Oakmont,” Greer’s daughter, Sharon Greer Smith, said. “She didn’t want anything away from here. She wanted it here so all her friends at Oakmont could participate.”
Smith said her mother’s desire to have the party at Oakmont so her friends there could enjoy it was another example of her generous and giving nature.
“She’s the kind of person who is always giving,” Smith said. “So it makes it special to celebrate her birthday. She’s a very, very special lady to everyone she meets.”
Among those attending the party was Wanda Canupp, a friend of Greer’s, who agreed with Smith’s assessment of her mother.
“If everybody was as sweet as this lady the world would be a different place,” Canupp said. “I’ve never heard her have a bad word for anybody.”
Greer has been at the residential care center since September and Assisted Living Facility Supervisor Virginia Babb had nothing but praise for the Greer family and their mother.
“We’re just pleased the family chose our facility to do the celebration,” Babb said. “Miss Greer is a wonderful resident and lovely person and we’re glad she chose to make her home here.”
Greer said she enjoyed her party and, more importantly, being with those she loves.
“It’s wonderful, it’s absolutely wonderful,” Greer said. “All of them are wonderful friends. I appreciate every one of them and love them.”
