UNION COUNTY — Fall is around the corner, which means it’s time for one of Union County’s favorite pastimes — high school football.
The Union Daily Times 2014 High School Football Preview is included inside today’s edition of The Union Daily Times.
The preview is themed, “If You Think You Can, You Will,” and it includes lots of photos and reading material to help fans get ready for the season.
The preview includes stories about the tradition of football in Union County as told by UCHS coaches who played locally. Other stories look at Union County players Shi Smith and Ty Washington, who have been recruited by Division 1 colleges; key players on Union County’s offense — such as quarterback De’Arrius Smith and running back Christian Petty — and defense — such as defensive end Cam Queen; the Union County cheerleaders; the UCHS Marching Band (a.k.a. The Sting Machine); and the Whitmire High School football and cheer season. Union County football sideline icon James “Cornbread” Barnett will also be featured.
Union County Yellow Jackets Head Football Coach Steve Taneyhill said this year his team is “all grown up.”
“We played so many young kids last year,” Taneyhill said. “We have 16 out of 22 returning. That’s a high number anywhere.”
Taneyhill said the theme for this year’s Yellow Jacket team is “Finish.” Last year, the team lost four games at the end of the season, and coaches and players want to keep that from happening this year. Taneyhill said with matured players and a phenomenal coaching staff which is rooted in the tradition of the Yellow Jackets, he is confident this will be a winning season.
This year’s football preview will be local fans’ one-stop shop for schedules, predictions, interviews, photos and an overall inside look at the upcoming season.
