PICKENS — Cycling enthusiast can help support the community service objectives of the Pickens Rotary Club by inaugurating the Ride to the Rock Saturday.

The route is designed to provide some riders with the challenge of a Caesar’s Head climb, said coordinator Linda Cassell of the Rotary Club. But less strenuous courses are also a part of the event

It offers 40k, 60k and 100k cycling events in northern Pickens County.

The longest route challenges riders with a 6-mile climb up Caesars’ Head. The shorter two take riders along routes north of Pickens, offering good climbs and views of Table Rock.

All three routes will begin at Pickens Recreation Center on Sangamo Road at 8 a.m. The project so far has attracted the attention and cooperation of the City of Pickens, the Rec. Center and the YMCA.

Organizers also see the possibilities of allowing the Ride to the Rock to become another piece of an endeavor to present Pickens as a tourist destination based on cycling and viewing the transitional landscape of the community. “Back roads offer good, scenic places to ride, “Cassell said. The city is finding grants and building a mountain bike park, plus partnering with the City of Easley on a Rails-to-Trails project along the former Doodle Line train route between the two cities.

Sponsors include Great Oaks Dental, City of Pickens, Blue Ridge Electric Co-op, Cornell Dubilier, The Reserve, Pickens Savings and Loan, Acker & Lambert, The Rock at Jocassee, Cassell & Hendricks, Pizza Inn, Hamton, Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility, Roper Law Firm, Great Escape, Hiott Printing,Walmart.
