MONARCH — A Monarch Elementary School student grew a colossal cabbage as part of a program that promotes vegetable gardening.

Olivia Yandel grew the cabbage through the Bonnie Bell Plants Cabbage Program. In 2002, Bonnie Plants started the 3rd Grade Cabbage Program with a mission to inspire a love of vegetable gardening in young people. Each year, they distribute more than one million free cabbage plants to 3rd Grade classrooms across the country. As part of the program, Bonnie Plants awards a $1,000 scholarship to one student in each state.

Olivia is the daughter of Johnnie and Cassandra Yandel. The Yandel family are the owners of Olivia’s New Way Gardening located on the Santuc-Carlisle Highway. They focus on organically grown produce and also sell their crops at the Union Farmers Market and Garden World in Spartanburg. Mr. and Mrs. Yandel provide fruits and vegetables to 5k students at Monarch Elementary as a part of the healthy snack initiative.
