UNION — The Fair Forest Chapter, NSDAR, met Nov. 5 in the Union County Museum meeting room.

Amy Bruce, Vice Regent, called the meeting to order. Kathleen Read read the Devotional, “Boundless Blessings,” from Hope for Each New Day by Billy Graham. Mrs. Bruce, Chairman of the Flag Committee, led the chapter in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the U.S., the American’s Creed, the Salute to the Flag of S.C., and the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner accompanied by Mrs. Read.

Martha Whitener, Chairman of the President General’s Committee, read the President’s General Message, “A Bounty of Opportunities.” Mrs. Read, Chairman of the National Defense Committee, read the National Defense Report, “Portable System Purifies Water on the Go,” which is used by soldiers and marines on the ground. Mrs. Bruce, Secretary, read the minutes of the Oct. 1 meeting.

The program “Varina Howell Davis, First Lady of the Confederacy,” was compiled by Jane Owenby and read by Kathleen Read.

Varina Howell was born on May 7, 1826 in rural Louisiana. In 1843 she met Jefferson Davis, a handsome older man, at a Christmas party. Marriage to Mr. Davis had a number of compensations, one of which was that she was able to spend 15 years in Washington, D.C. He was a professional politician, representing Mississippi as a Democrat in the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. He was appointed Confederate president in 1861.

Dec. 3, the chapter will meet at Andy’s Restaurant for a luncheon.
